It is best known for its Sauvignon Blanc wines, which are made in several styles at different price points. It is a familiar label in many export markets, catering to and benefitting from strong demand for this grape variety. Stoneleigh is owned by the major international beverage company Pernod Ricard. The French giant also owns other New Zealand labels, including Brancott Estate and Church Road. Based specifically in the sub-region of Wairau Valley, the vineyards are planted in the now-dry ancient river bed created by the historic route of the Wairau river. The stones that give Stoneleigh its name were deposited by the river and retain the day’s heat, allowing the grapes to reach higher levels of ripeness. This is key for Sauvignon Blanc, but also for the other varieties planted in the vineyard. These include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Merlot and Pinot Noir. Stoneleigh’s standard label is the most widely distributed of several ranges. Higher-end offerings are made under the Wild Valley, Latitude and Raparua collections. In addition a Stoneleigh Lighter range of wines has been introduced. This is comprised of a Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and rosé. Grapes are picked earlier to produce wines 25 percent lower in alcohol than their conventional equivalents. This move is one example of the industry wide NZ Lighter Wines program.
