Imagine owning vineyards on the foothills of an active volcano. Nutty though it may seem, to winemaker Giuseppe Russo, it’s just a way of life. Some lava flow is so recent you can’t even plant on it! The vineyards are very high nearing 800 feet above sea level, often using narrow terraces held up by stone walls. The vines must survive in these mineral-rich soils, which thrive considering there is often no rain in summer. Many of the vineyards are surrounded by olive and hazelnut groves, all whilst growing at the base of Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna.nnSan Lorenzo is a single vineyard coming from the larger contrada of Randazzo. These are coplanted 80 year old vines that sit at a relatively high altitude of 750 plus meters above sea level. Only the oldest vines from a single hectare parcel are used for this wine. San Lorenzo is aged in a variety of formats, with large barrels, cement, and vats.
